Caleb Plant Eyes Canelo or Crawford After Resendiz Tune-Up

WBA interim super middleweight contender Caleb Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) has his sights set on a blockbuster bout with the winner of the upcoming Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford showdown set for September 12th. But before he earns that shot, he’ll need to handle business against Jose Armando Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) on May 31st.
The clash with Resendiz marks Plant’s second tune-up since suffering a loss to David Benavidez in 2023. While he returned with a knockout win over Trevor McCumby, critics argue that Plant has yet to prove he’s back to elite form.
“I feel like Canelo was at his peak when we fought. Maybe he’s getting older now,” said Plant, hinting at doubts about Alvarez’s current form.
“My losses make me stronger. I’m not letting Resendiz take this from me.”
Plant last fought Canelo in 2021 and was stopped in the 11th round. Since then, his only wins have come against ageing veterans, prompting questions about his trajectory. Still, he remains confident.
“Falling short doesn’t deter my confidence. I’m one step closer to what I want,”
But critics are sceptical. Resendiz is seen as a stepping stone, and some argue that Plant’s recent opponents have been soft. Despite the doubts, Plant is focused on securing a second chance—either against Canelo or a new rival in Terence Crawford, should the Omaha-born champion pull off the upset.
